How long a candle warmer lamp should run — and why longer isn't better
New candle warmer owners nearly always run their lamp for too long, on the reasonable assumption that more hours means more scent. It does not really work that way, and understanding why saves both fragrance and electricity.
What happens in the first twenty minutes
From cold, nothing much happens for the first few minutes while the bulb warms the glass and the surface of the wax. Then a pool forms — first a soft patch in the centre, then spreading outward to the edges.
Once that pool covers the whole surface, the candle is working at full capacity. This is the point you are aiming for, and on a higher brightness setting it takes roughly fifteen to twenty minutes.
What happens after the first hour
The fragrance oils sitting in the top layer of wax are released fairly quickly. After the first half hour to hour, the surface has given up most of what it has readily available, and the rate at which more arrives is limited by how fast oil migrates up from the wax below.
Meanwhile, the room has reached about as much fragrance as it can hold. Scent does not accumulate indefinitely — it disperses through doorways, gets absorbed by soft furnishings, and your own nose adapts to it within minutes.
So hour four does not smell four times stronger than hour one. It smells about the same, while quietly spending fragrance from your candle.
The settings most people end up on
Two hours is the standard evening setting: on when you sit down, off before you go up.
Four hours suits a working day at home or an afternoon with people in the house.
Eight hours is the overnight setting, and it exists mainly so that you can fall asleep in a scented room without anything alight. Turn the brightness down when you use it — a bedroom at full output all night is both wasteful and, by about 2am, quite a lot.
The pattern worth adopting: high brightness for the first twenty minutes to build the pool, then down to half or a quarter for the remainder.
Running costs, briefly
A 50 W bulb running four hours uses about 0.2 kWh, which at typical UK rates is a matter of pennies. That is genuinely not a reason to limit how long you run it — the reason is the candle, not the meter.
When to give the candle a rest
If the wax has been liquid for many hours over several days, the surface layer can end up noticeably weaker than the wax below. Let the candle set fully and rest for a day and it will smell distinctly better on the next session.
The short version
Twenty minutes at high brightness to build an edge-to-edge pool. Then down to half. Two hours for an evening, eight only for overnight and at a low setting. Longer runs do not make a room smell stronger — they just use the candle up.
