A woven rope shade that folds flat when you're done

A handwoven hemp shade in a black steel frame — warmer to look at than glass, and the only lamp in our range that folds down for storage.

The woven shade insulates rather than radiating heat outward, four brightness levels dim steplessly, and a 1, 2 or 4 hour timer covers an evening. Two 50 W bulbs are included and the whole thing packs flat between seasons.

LAOPAO Hemp Rope Candle Warmer Lamp

Everything else in this range is glass. This one is rope: a shade woven by hand from hemp cord, held in a slim black steel frame. It is a completely different look — warmer and more textured, closer to a rattan pendant than to a table lamp — and it suits rooms with linen, wood and plants far better than a cut-glass shade does.

The weave has a practical side too. A glass shade radiates heat outward as well as downward; a woven fibre one insulates, so more of the heat goes where you want it, down onto the candle, and the outside of the shade stays more comfortable to be near. It also means the light escapes as a scatter of small points through the weave rather than as a wash.

It is the only lamp we sell that packs away. The frame folds and the shade lifts off, so if you are the sort of person who puts the candles away in April and gets them out in October, this one goes in the cupboard flat instead of taking up a shelf all summer. It also makes it the easiest to take to a holiday cottage.

Controls are on an in-line handset: one-touch power, four brightness levels on short presses and stepless dimming if you hold the button, plus a timer of 1, 2 or 4 hours. Those are shorter presets than most lamps offer — fine for an evening in one room, less suited to running a candle all night, so if overnight scenting is what you want, one of our 8-hour lamps is the better choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a rope shade safe above a hot bulb?

It is designed for it — the weave sits away from the bulb and hemp is used precisely because it insulates rather than conducting heat. As with any warmer, keep it clear of curtains and other fabric, and let it cool before handling.

Does the woven shade block the light?

It scatters it. Light escapes through the gaps in the weave as a pattern of small points rather than a smooth glow, which is softer than glass and rather more atmospheric in a dark room.

Why would I want a shade that insulates?

More of the bulb's heat goes downward onto the candle instead of radiating out through the shade, and the outside of the shade stays more comfortable to be near than hot glass.

How does the folding work?

The shade lifts off and the steel frame collapses, so the lamp packs flat rather than needing a shelf all year. It is the only lamp in our range that does this.

Why is the timer only up to 4 hours?

That is what this model offers — 1, 2 or 4 hours. It suits an evening in one room. If you want a candle scenting a bedroom all night, choose one of our lamps with an 8-hour setting instead.

What is the difference between the four levels and stepless dimming?

A short press steps between the four preset levels; holding the button slides smoothly through the whole range so you can stop anywhere in between.

How does a candle warmer lamp work?

A warm bulb above the candle melts the surface of the wax. The fragrance lifts out of that pool into the room, the wick is never lit, and the wax sets flat again when you switch off.

Does the candle get used up?

Very slowly. Nothing is burned away, so the wax stays in the jar and what you lose over time is fragrance.

Will my candle fit?

Standard and medium jar candles, tins and dishes of wax melts all work. For very large three-wick tubs, one of our lamps with 17 cm of clearance is the safer choice.

Can I clean the rope shade?

Dust only — a soft dry brush, or a vacuum on its lowest setting held slightly away from the weave. Never wet it: hemp rope stains and can distort as it dries.

Will it smell of hemp?

There can be a faint natural fibre smell for the first hour or two of use, which fades. After that the only thing you should smell is the candle.

Is it safe around children and pets?

It removes the open flame, which is the usual reason people switch, but the shade and bulb area get hot in use. Keep it out of reach and let it cool before folding or moving it.

Are bulbs included?

Yes, two 50 W bulbs come in the box, so there is a spare from the start.

Does it come with a UK plug?

It runs on standard UK mains. Where the supplier confirms the plug type we state it on the listing; if it is not shown, message us before ordering and we will confirm what your unit ships with.

Does it work with wax melts?

Yes. Put them in a shallow heatproof dish so the bulb sits close — no tealight is needed underneath.

Do you deliver, and how long does it take?

Yes, across the UK. Delivery estimates and options are shown at checkout before you pay.

What are the delivery costs?

Delivery is free on UK orders of £35 or more. This lamp is £33.99, so on its own it carries a flat £3.95 delivery charge — add anything else to reach £35 and delivery is free. The exact charge is shown before you confirm.

Can I return it if it does not suit me?

Yes, in line with our returns policy. Keep the packaging if you can — and please return the shade unmarked, since woven fibre shows handling more than glass.

Does it come with a warranty?

A specific warranty length is not confirmed in our product record, so we will not quote one. Your statutory rights apply, and you can ask us before buying.

Glass, metal or woven: choosing a candle warmer shade material

4 min read Emberlight

The shade is the part of a candle warmer you look at, and it is also the part that decides how the light behaves and how the heat moves. There are really three choices on the market.

Clear glass

The default, and the most efficient. Clear glass lets almost all the light out, so you see the melt pool easily and the lamp gives the most glow for the wattage. Fluted and ribbed versions break the light into bands for pattern without losing much brightness.

The trade-offs: it radiates heat outward as well as down, so the outside of the shade gets properly hot; it looks like empty glassware when switched off; and it is the most breakable option in a busy room.

Choose it if you want maximum performance and a clean look, or if you like being able to see the wax.

Coloured or mosaic glass

Amber, green and mosaic shades absorb a good deal of light and throw colour onto the walls. They look warm even when off, which matters for an object sitting out permanently.

The cost is brightness and a little melting speed — expect to run a coloured shade a step brighter than a clear one. Mosaic shades add cleaning difficulty and fragility on top.

Choose one if the lamp is going somewhere visible and you want it to be an ornament as much as an appliance.

Woven fibre

Hemp, rattan and similar shades behave differently. They insulate rather than radiating, so more heat goes down onto the candle and the outside stays cooler to be near. The light comes through the weave as a scatter of small points, which is the softest effect of the three.

They also bring texture to a room in a way glass never does, and they are the only type that reliably folds or collapses for storage.

The trade-offs are cleaning — dust only, never damp — and marking. A woven shade shows handling, and you cannot wipe a fingerprint off it.

Choose one if your room has linen, wood and plants in it, or if you want to be able to put the lamp away out of season.

What does not change

The wattage of the bulb, the melting mechanism and the effect on the candle are essentially the same whichever shade you pick. A rope shade and a glass shade with the same bulb will both melt a candle evenly and both make it last far longer than burning it does.

So the choice is genuinely about the room and how you live with the object, rather than about performance.

The short version

Clear glass for brightness and seeing the pool. Coloured or mosaic for a lamp that decorates the room. Woven fibre for texture, cooler outside surfaces, and the ability to fold it away. The candle does not care.

Page summary

The LAOPAO Hemp Rope Candle Warmer Lamp is an electric candle warmer sold by Emberlight in the UK for £33.99. It melts scented jar candles from above with two 50 W bulbs rather than lighting the wick, so there is no flame, smoke or soot. Instead of glass, the shade is handwoven hemp rope in a slim black steel frame on a square base about 17.3 cm across, and it weighs roughly 1.1 kg. The woven shade insulates rather than radiating heat outward. Brightness has four levels with stepless dimming on a long press, and the timer offers 1, 2 or 4 hours with automatic shut-off — shorter than the 8-hour presets on other lamps in the range, so it suits an evening rather than overnight use. The frame folds and the shade detaches, making it the only lamp in the range that packs flat for storage. Two 50 W bulbs are included. Warranty length and country of origin are not specified in our product record.
